Lower Saucon Township native Matt Mattare wins opening round match in 2018 U.S. Mid-Amateur

CHARLOTTE NC — Lower Saucon Township native Matt Mattare defeated Bradford Tilley of Easton, Connecticut 2-and-1 in Monday’s opening round of the 38th U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship.
A quarterfinalist in the event in 2012, Mattare entered the match at Charlotte Country Club as the number 62 seed in the 64-player match play competition.
All square through 15 holes, Mattare won the 16th hole with a birdie, and the 17th hole with a par to close out the match.
Mattare advanced to Tuesday’s round of 32. He will play number 35 seed Brett Tomfohrde of Chicago.

1. 2012: quarterfinalist in the U.S. Mid-Amateur at Conway Farms Golf Club in Lake Forest, Illinois
2. 2013: earned qualifying medalist honors in the U.S. Mid-Amateur at the Country Club of Birmingham, Alabama
3. 2014: advanced to the sweet 16 in the U.S. Mid-Amateur at Saucon Valley Country Club
4. 2016: lost in a playoff to advance to match play at the Stonewall Links in Elverson, Pa.
5. 2018: advanced to the round of 32 in the U.S. Mid-Amateur at Charlotte Country Club and Carolina Country Club in Charlotte, North Carolina.
