Four-time District 11 champion Williams Mirams earns AA boys medalist honors at the 2018 PIAA East Region Golf Championships
October 15, 2018
RUSCOMBMANOR TWP. — William Mirams is now one step closer toward his ultimate goal as a high school golfer.
Mirams, a Notre Dame of East Stroudsburg senior, shot 2-over-par 74 to earn AA boys qualifying medalist honors at Monday’s 2018 PIAA East Region Golf Championships at Golden Oaks Golf Club.
Mirams earned a fourth consecutive trip to the PIAA state golf championships, and a chance to win the coveted title. He has finished eighth, fifth, and second in his previous three trips.
“If I play like I normally play, I will be fine,” said Mirams, who has won a record four consecutive District 11 AA boys golf championships. “It’s probably the biggest achievement I could have in high school, winning states.”
Overall, three boys and three girls from District 11 successfully qualified for next week’s PIAA State Golf Championships, a 36-hole event to be played October 22-23 at Heritage Hills Golf Resort in York.
Mirams and Schuylkill Haven senior Albe Evans (81) advanced to the AA boys competition, while the AAA boys qualifier was Northampton senior Andrew Hozza (75). Hozza was the 2018 District 11 AAA boys runner-up.
Stroudsburg senior Olivia Patrow (78) and Emmaus sophomore Michelle Cox (79) advanced to the AAA girls competition.
Patrow, who won the 2018 District 11 AAA girls title, is making her second consecutive trip to the state tournament. Cox , a two-time Eastern Pennsylvania Conference girls champion, was the 2018 District 11 AAA girls runner-up.
Moravian Academy sophomore Grace Sanborn shot 91 to advance to the AA girls state competition. Sanborn won the 2018 District 11 AA girls title.
Mirams, who said that he has verbally committed to the University of Delaware to continue his golf career, started slow with four straight three-putt bogeys, but turned his round around with sharp iron approach shots.
Overall, 27 out of 52 AAA boys advanced, with a cutoff score of 77.
In the AA boys competition, 14 golfers advanced out of the 26-player field, with a cut-off score of 82.
Overall, 13 AAA girls out of the 24-player field advanced, with a cutoff score of 81.
