Dave Blichar qualifies for U.S. Senior Amateur
September 20, 2018
HADDONFIELD, NJ– Dave Blichar of Upper Macungie Township successfully qualified Monday for the 64th U.S. Senior Amateur Championship.
Blichar shot 1-under–par 71 at Tavistock Country Club in Haddonfield, NJ in a USGA sectional qualifier to earn qualifying medalist honors, and capture one of the four available spots.
The 54-year-old Blichar advanced to the championship, to be played August 25-30 at Eugene Country Club in Eugene, Oregon.
Blichar hit 16 greens in regulation and used 32 putts.
“It’s unbelievable,” Blichar said. “To be a medalist in a Phiily sectional qualifier with these players is great. I’m driving it consistent. I’m making my fair share of putts, and I still have my short game.”
Blichar, a Lehigh Valley Golf Hall of Fame inductee, earned his second career USGA national championship qualification. In 1993, Blichar qualified for the U.S. Amateur.
With the victory, Blichar has opened a huge lead in the 2018 Lehigh Valley Senior Player of the Year points race. This season, Blichar has won the Lehigh Valley Senior Inter-Club Championship and Lehigh Valley Senior Amateur Medal Play Championship. He also won the Lehigh Valley Mid-Amateur title.
At the U.S. Senior Amateur, Blichar shot 73-76–149 to tie for 25th place in stroke play qualifying, and advance to match play competition.
Blichar won his opening round match 3-and-2 over Timothy Shepherd of East Peoria, Illinois. In the round of 32 on August 28, Blichar lost 3-and-2 to Jack Larkin of Atlanta, Georgia.
