September 20, 2018
MITCHELLVILLE, MD– Former Nazareth golfer Kevin Scherr qualified Tuesday for the 118th U.S. Amateur Championship.
Scherr, a rising sophomore golfer at Youngstown State, shot even-par 71-73–144 at The Country Club at Woodmore to finish 36 holes of regulation play in a five-way tie for the fifth and final qualifying spot.
The sudden-death playoff featured only three golfers, since two players left the course. Scherr made pars on the course’s first and 18th holes to prevail.
Scherr, 18, advanced to the championship, to be played August 13-19 at Pebble Beach Golf Resorts in Pebble Beach, CA. A total of 312 golfers will comprise the field. This is Scherr’s first trip to the U.S. Amateur.
For the two rounds, Scherr made six birdies, 24 pars, and six bogeys.
“It was two polar opposite days,” said Scherr, who was the 2016 PIAA state champion while a senior at Nazareth Area High School. “The first day I hit my driver in the fairway. I missed the greens, but on the greens made everything. I hit fairways today. I did hit the greens, but didn’t make any putts.”
Scherr won the 2018 Lehigh Valley Inter-Club Championship and the 2016 Lehigh Valley Tournament of Champions. In his freshman campaign at Youngstown State, Scherr led the Penguins golf team in scoring average, and was sixth in the 2018 Horizon League Golf Championships.
At the 2018 U.S. Amateur, Scherr missed the cut with rounds of 78-76–154
