Nazareth golfer Collin Seip wins 2017 Lehigh Valley Junior Medal Play Championship
MOORE TWP. — Nazareth rising senior Collin Seip pulled away down the stretch Thursday to win the 25th annual Lehigh Valley Junior Medal Play Championship at Whitetail Golf Club.
Seip, a key member of the 2016 Blue Eagles PIAA State 3A Team Championship runner-up golf team, finished with a 36-hole score of 7-over-par 74-77–151 to win by three strokes over recent Pen Argyl graduate Sam Martini, who shot 76-78–154.
Seip, the 2016 Lehigh Valley Amateur junior division champion, held the lead the entire tournament; except when Martini briefly held a share of the lead with Seip on the eighth and ninth holes of Thursday’s final round.
Beginning Thursday’s final round on the tenth hole, Seip and Martini were tied for the lead after the back nine at 6-over-par.
Seip birdied the par-4 first hole to take a one-stroke lead. After both golfers birdied the par-4 second hole, Seip’s lead stretched to two strokes when Martini bogeyed the third hole.
After matching pars on the fourth and fifth holes, Seip’s lead ballooned to five strokes when Martini triple-bogeyed the par-4 sixth hole.
Despite closing with a double bogey and a bogey, the 17-year-old Seip won by a comfortable three stroke margin.
Seip, the medalist in the 2016 District 11 3A Boys Qualifying Tournament, will compete in next week’s 10th annual Lehigh Valley Open at Northampton Country Club.
