John Olszewski wins 2017 Northeast Pennsylvania Amateur Stroke Play title
POLK TWP. — John Olszewski of Lower Macungie Township staged a final-round rally Sunday to win the 22nd annual Northeast Pennsylvania Amateur Stroke Play Championship at Hideaway Hills Golf Club.
Olszewski, 52, shot a 36-hole score of 3-over-par 76-71–147 to edge Dan Joseph of Cranford, NJ (73-75–148) by one stroke. Olszewski previously won the tournament in 1998 and 2002.
Notre Dame of East Stroudsburg sophomore William Mirams was third at 79-74–153. Mirams is a two-time District 11 AA boys champion.
Olszewski shot a 1-under-par 35 on the front nine Sunday to trail first-round leader Joseph by two strokes.
Playing one group ahead of Joseph, both players birdied the par-5 tenth hole. Olszewski then registered seven consecutive pars to take a two-stroke lead, while the 42-year-old Joseph bogeyed holes 12, 14, 16, and 17.
Olszewski 3-putt the par-5 18th green from 15 feet for a bogey. Joseph later missed his birdie putt on the hole in an attempt to force a playoff.
For the final round, Olszewski hit 15 greens in regulation and had 33 putts. Joseph hit 13 greens in regulation and used 34 putts, including 3-putt bogeys on the 14th and 16th holes.
The victory adds to Olszewski’s outstanding amateur golf career resume which also includes winning the 2015 Lehigh Valley Inter-Club Championship, and qualifying for the 2000 U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship.
