Joe Coulson wins his second Lehigh Valley Mid-Amateur title
UPPER SAUCON TWP. — Joe Coulson two-putted for birdie on the first sudden-death playoff hole Friday to win the 22nd annual Lehigh Valley Mid-Amateur Championship at Wedgewood Golf Course.
Coulson, who has served as Wedgewood’s general manager for the past 17 years, was tied after 27 holes of regulation play at 6-under-par 100 with Jason Wilson of South Whitehall Township.
Both golfers shot 3-under-par 32 on the facility’s Maple Nine in the morning, then both registered 3-under-par 68 in the afternoon.
Coulson and Wilson both had seven birdies and one bogey for 27 holes.
On the sudden-death playoff hole — the Maple Nine’s 486 yard, par-5 first hole, Coulson hit the green in two shots. Wilson’s drive hit a tree off the tee, but he managed to have a long birdie putt to extend the playoff. After Wilson missed his birdie putt attempt, Coulson two-putt from 20 feet to win his second Lehigh Valley Mid-Amateur title (2013, 2017).
Two golfers tied for third place at even-par 106: Jeff Hudson of Upper Saucon Township (34-72–106) and Tom Timby of Doylestown, who shot 36-70–106. Hudson won the event in 2014.
Coulson, a 53-year-old Upper Saucon Township resident, previously won the 2014 Lehigh Valley Inter-Club Championship.
“I just wanted to hit the greens and make putts,” said Coulson, who earned exempt status for the 2017 Lehigh Valley Open with the victory. “My chipping and putting was good. I had only one three-putt green all day.”
Wilson, 43, won the Lehigh Valley Medal Play Championship in mid-June.
The tournament was shortened from the scheduled 36 holes due to heavy early morning rains.
