Eric Ostrosky’s hole-in-one keys team’s victory in 3rd Donald Ross Invitational
June 13, 2016
HELLERTOWN, Pa — Eric Ostrosky and Jesse Bingaman kept the title at their home club.
Led by Ostrosky’s third career hole-in-one, the duo shot a 36-hole score of 6-under-par 66-72–138 Sunday to win the 3rd annual Donald Ross Invitational better ball of partners tournament at Silver Creek Country Club.
Ostrosky, a 44-year-old Bethlehem resident, and the 25-year-old Bingaman of Lower Nazareth Township, won by two strokes over Zach Fischl of Northampton and John Dimler of Camp Hill (72-68–140).
The victory by Ostrosky and Bingaman — a pair of former Northampton CC club champions — is the third straight year that the title has been won by Northampton CC members. Dave Olexson Sr. and Dave Olexson Jr. of Williams Township won the crown in 2014 and 2015.
Leading by one stroke at 5-under-par through the seventh hole Sunday over Fischl and Dimler, and the Brookside CC duo of Mark Coassolo and Adam Sutovich, Ostrosky aced the 158-yard, par-3 eighth hole to open a three-stroke edge.
The punch 6-iron landed eight feet from the flagstick, bounced twice, and rolled gently into the cup.
“I knew it was good when I hit it,” said Ostrosky, the 1989 District 11 champion from Pottsville High School. “The next hole, I played better than I had all day. Once that happened, we thought that it would be hard to beat us.”
Bingaman, a former Nazareth High School golf standout, shot a 68 on his own ball Saturday to key the team’s opening round of 6-under-par 66. He credited good distance putting to the good score.
“I made two 20-footers in a row for par to start the round,” Bingaman said. “On the ninth I made a 15-foot birdie putt. I made a 15 footer for eagle on the 15th hole. It was a straight downhill bender.”
In the senior division, a pair of Lehigh Valley Golf Hall of Fame inductees — Dave Blichar and Dominic Carr — won the title in a three hole sudden-death playoff over Tom Soares of Lower Macungue Township and Tom Michalek of Breinigsville. Both teams finished 36 holes of regulation play tied at even-par 144.
Both teams made par, birdie on the first two playoff holes. On the third playoff hole, the par-4 12th hole, Carr sank a 10-foot par putt to clinch the victory.
Blichar and Carr also won the senior title in 2014.
