Notre Dame of East Stroudsburg senior William Mirams wins PIAA AA boys state title
October 23, 2018
YORK — Notre Dame of East Stroudsburg senior William Mirams rallied on his final nine holes Tuesday, October 23 to win the AA boys title in the 2018 PIAA State Golf Championships .
Verbally committed to continuing his golf career at the University of Delaware, Mirams shot a final round 2-over-par 36-40–76 in windy conditions at Heritage Hills Golf Resort.
Mirams finished with a 36-hole score of 7-over-par 73-76–149 to win by two strokes over Devon Prep sophomore Ryan McCabe (79-72–151), and Kennedy Catholic senior R.J. Pezzuto (77-74).
Mirams, who has won a record four consecutive District 11 AA boys titles, became just the fifth male golfer in District 11 history to win the boys state golf championship.
Norman Staats of Wilson Area High School (1938), Robert Schoener Jr. of Allentown High School (1951), Justin Kolumber of Parkland (1996), and Kevin Scherr of Nazareth (2016) won state titles as seniors.
Overall, Mirams was the only District 11 golfer to post a top-5 finish Tuesday to earn all-state honors.
Before winning the title this year, Mirams tied for eighth place in the PIAA AA boys state championship as a freshman in 2015, tied for fifth place as a sophomore in 2016, and tied for second place as a junior in 2017.
“It’s pretty cool,” Mirams said. “Especially since each year my place has improved, and so has my score.”
Tied for the lead at 2-over-par after Monday’s opening round, Mirams began his second round in the tenth hole. He started slow on the back nine with four bogeys, a double bogey on the par-3 15th hole, and a one birdie on the 16th hole to shoot 5-over-par 40.
Trailing a group of three golfers by one stroke as he stood on the first tee to begin his second nine holes, Mirams calmed himself down.
“After I finished my ninth hole, the 18th hole, I stood on the first tee,” Mirams said. “I said William, you are not in the lead anymore. You have nine holes to play in your high school career. This is not how you go out. I played my heart out.”
Mirams birdied the second, fifth (15-foot sidehill birdie putt), and seventh holes to break open a four-stroke lead with just two holes to play.
After a double bogey on the par-3 eighth hole cut his lead to two shots, Mirams hit a big drive on the par-4 ninth hole to set up a short approach shot to the green and a two-putt par.
“I smoked the drive on the last hole,” Mirams said. “I hit it around 330 yards. I had around 110 yards left (to the green).”
Schuylkill Haven junior Albe Evans finished tied for 35th place in the AA boys event after shooting an 88-93–181
In the AAA boys competition, Franklin Regional senior Palmer Jackson shot 2-under-par 73-67–140 to win the title by four strokes over Pittsburgh Central Catholic senior Jimmy Meyers, who shot 74-70–144.
Northampton senior Andrew Hozza shot 81-86–167 to finish in 31st place in the AAA boys competition.
North Allegheny senior Caroline Wrigley shot 3-over-par 74-73–147 to win the AAA girls event by seven strokes over Chambersburg senior Mary Kate Norcross (75-79–154), and Uniontown senior Danae Rugoia, who shot 76-78-154.
Stroudsburg senior Olivia Patrow, the 2018 District 11 AAA girls champion, finished in eighth place after shooting 84-76–160.
Mirams and Patrow are pupils of Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort teaching professional Brian Bergstol.
Emmaus sophomore Michelle Cox, a two-time Eastern Pennsylvania Conference girls champion, shot 79-87–166 to finish in 13th place.
In the AA girls competition, North Catholic junior Madie Smithco won her second consecutive state title. Smithco shot 78-77–155 to win by two strokes over North East freshman Lydia Swan, who shot 74-83–157.
Smithco was also the 2016 AA girls runner-up.
Moravian Academy sophomore Grace Sanborn shot 104-97–201 to finish in 18th place. Sanborn won the 2018 Colonial League and District 11 AA girls titles.
