September 26, 2018
CHARLOTTE NC — Lower Saucon Township native Matt Mattare lost 3-and-2 Tuesday afternoon to Ryan Eibner of Dallas, Texas in the round of 16 at the 38th U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship.
A quarterfinalist in the event in 2012, Mattare edged Brett Tomfohrde of Chicago 2-and-1 in a second round of 32 match Tuesday morning at Charlotte Country Club.
All square with Eibner through seven holes, Eibner won the par-4 eighth and ninth holes with a par and birdie to go 2-up.
Mattare, a former Central Catholic golfer (2004), won the par-4 tenth hole with a birdie, but Eibner — a former East Carolina University golfer (2014) — won the 11th and 15th holes with a par and birdie to go 3-up.
Eibner closed out the match when both golfers parred the par-4 16th hole.
Fresh off winning the 2018 Pennsylvania Mid-Amateur last week at his home Saucon Valley Country Club (Weyhill Course), the 32-year-old Mattare has now advanced to the round of 16 three times since 2012.
