John Olszewski wins record fourth Northeast PA Amateur Stroke Play title
POLK TWP. — John Olszewski of Lower Macungie Township staged a final-round rally Sunday to win the 23rd annual Northeast Pennsylvania Amateur Stroke Play Championship at Hideaway Hills Golf Club.
Olszewski, 53, shot a 36-hole score of 8-over-par 76-76–152 to win the tournament for the second consecutive year.
John Dimler, a former Parkland and Moravian College golfer, finished in second place at 73-83–156.
Overall, Olszewski has won the tournament a record four times: 1998, 2002, 2017, and 2018.
Trailing first-round leader Dimler by three strokes entering Sunday’s final round, Olszewski shot 4-over-par 40 on the front nine Sunday to grab a one stroke lead over Andrew Frank of Allentown, and a two stroke edge over Dimler.
Olszewski shot an even-par 36 on the back nine to steadily pull away from the field.
Dimler bogeyed the 11th, 12th and 13th holes to fall five strokes behind Olszewski.
Frank trailed Olszewski by just one stroke after the 12th hole, but a bogey on the par-3 14th hole and a double bogey on the par-4 15th hole dropped him out of title contention.
For the final round, Olszewski hit 14 greens in regulation and had 34 putts.
The victory adds to Olszewski’s outstanding amateur golf career resume which also includes winning the 2015 Lehigh Valley Inter-Club Championship, 2017 Donald Ross Invitational senior title, and qualifying for the 2000 U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship.
